RoboMentor is an educational software that focuses on how to program industrial robots manufactured by ABB. The program is meant for absolute beginners, and everything is presented as simply and clearly as possible.
What can you learn?
The idea of programming industrial robots might sound as challenging as the idea of flying Boeing 737. However, you will find that it actually is easier than you would except. “It’s easy once you know how it’s done”. You just need to learn some basic concepts and techniques to get started. Interactive exercises will guide you step-by-step. You will start with basics, such as moving robot’s joints and saving poses. Later you will learn more advanced topics such as RAPID programming. At the end of the course you will try to teach the robot to draw.
Suitable for beginners
You don’t need any previous experience with robotics in order to use this program. Exercises will start with simple basic things, and you are guided step-by-step as if a “personal trainer” would stand next to you and give constant guidance.Suitable for educators

Small steps
You can’t reach great heights at one leap. By using “ladder”, dividing your ascend into smaller steps, you can go much higher. RoboMentor exercises help you to increase your knowledge about robotics in “small steps”. You will go through 50 interactive exercises that start with very easy things and slowly move into more advanced topics. Individual exercises follow usually this pattern:
Read a short overview
about the topic you are
about to learn.
Perform the task in
“simplified 3d view” by
following step-by-step
instructions.
Watch video “The same
task in ABB RobotStudio”.
Try to remember what you
just learned and apply that
in ABB RobotStudio.
If you have access to
physical robot, you can
also use it to test your
newly acquired skill.
If you fail to apply what
you learned, don’t give up.
Just repeat the exercise
from the beginning and try
again.
Perform a simplified version of actual task
When you start to study robotics and ABB RobotStudio, you likely feel that you are drowning into technical details. It’s like a huge pile of jigsaw puzzle pieces have been poured into your lap but you have no idea how they fit together. RoboMentor helps you to get a general overview before getting into technical details. Each exercise starts with a “simplified version” of actual task. You just follow clear step-by-step instructions in 3d view, thus getting a basic idea of the task at hand. After getting a “general picture” in this way all the technical details that you will learn later will automatically fall into right places.

Next you will watch video in which the task that you just performed will be repeated in ABB RobotStudio. This will include many technical details that were not involved in “simplified version”. Keep your eyes open and try to memorize all the steps that you see on the video. As you see, even though the first part might have seemed like a “child’s play”, you still learned principles and techniques that apply directly into programming real industrial robots.
Apply what you just learned and use your
imagination
Now we will see if you have truly mastered the skill that was just teached! Start ABB RobotStudio and try to repeat the task that you just saw by heart. However, don’t repeat the task exacly in the same way that you saw on the video. Use your imagination and try to apply the same principle into some other task. That way you force your brains to analyze things actively and the lesson will be imprinted into your long-term memory. If your first attempt is not a perfect success, don’t give up. Just repeat the whole exercise and try again. Even the eagles are not masters of the sky at their first flight. Tip: If you don’t know the function of some button that is clicked on the video, move mouse cursor on top of that button and click F1. This will open ABB RobotStudio manual at the page that explains the function of that button in detail.
